T.H. McGinn and Company, Inc. - Specializing in the restoration and preservation of historic buildings
Conservation & Repairs

Within the context of historic preservation, conservation means preserving an original component of a structure. The process includes determining structural stability, counteracting chemical and physical deterioration, and developing treatments based on an evaluation of the aesthetic, historic and material characteristics of the component.

Frequently, conservation work also includes both restoration and repair elements. When conservation is not feasible, repair and or restoration of a component to replicate the original is the next best approach.

Most of our projects include aspects of conservation, repair and restoration. As a rule we conduct an investigation that documents the building’s existing condition. We then analyze the information gathered to develop treatments sufficient to eliminate the deterioration mechanisms, while retaining as much original fabric as possible and repairing or restoring what cannot be conserved.
